Chunghwa to launch 5G pilot in 2019 in partnership with Ericsson

28 Feb 2018

Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom has inked a cooperation memorandum with Swedish vendor Ericsson for a joint 5G pilot project. As per the partnership the two companies will reportedly deploy a 5G network at designated sites at the start of 2019, with Chi-Mau Sheih, President of Chunghwa Telecom, noting that the trial infrastructure will utilise the 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands, and will look to test interoperability between 5G and 4G, while also validating innovative applications. The project builds on a 5G Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two companies last year, and it has been claimed it will ‘accelerate the deployment of 5G in Taiwan’ and ‘help realise Chunghwa Telecom’s 5G pre-commercialisation plan for 2020’.
