Lebanese incumbent telco Ogero has awarded contracts to three consortiums – SERTA Channels-Huawei, BMB-Calix and Powertech-Nokia – to deploy fibre-optics from the operator’s central offices (COs, telecoms exchanges) to street cabinets and end-user premises throughout Lebanon, the Daily Star reported, citing an announcement from Ogero chief Imad Kreidieh on Tuesday 13 February. The winners were revealed following a tender involving four bidders, with the three victorious Lebanese firms – SERTA Channels, BMB and Powertech – forming partnerships with China’s Huawei, US-based Calix and Nokia of Finland, respectively. Prime Minister Saad Hariri gave a news conference describing the FTTx project as one of the government’s most important achievements to date, adding: ‘We are very late in entering the FTTx phase, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do this. This is very important for Lebanon.’
