US-based software defined access and cloud products developer Calix has been selected by the Philippines’ largest cable operator, SKY Cable, to supply an end-to-end solution that it says will ‘leverage the seamless integration of AXOS with DOCSIS back office systems to ensure a simplified and accelerated transition to a Software Defined Network’. The cableco plans to offer its services to end users in the greater metropolitan areas of Manila and Rizal, as well as the regions of Cavite and Laguna, it says. To further its goals, SKY Cable has selected Calix’s AXOS E3-2 Intelligent PON Node ‘to seamlessly transition from traditional cable plant to an agile, always on, software defined network’. SKY Cable will also deploy AXOS DPx, which the vendor describes as ‘the industry’s first virtualised DOCSIS connector’, and Calix-supplied Wi-Fi enabled GigaHubs at subscribers’ homes and businesses.
The cable operator’s vice president of network engineering, Solito G Mapolon, said: ‘As we partner with Calix to move to an FTTH infrastructure and lay the foundation for the virtualised networks of the future, that tradition continues. With Calix AXOS solutions at the heart of our network, we will be able to roll out new services faster than ever before and deliver our subscribers a quality of experience like no other.’ Calix claims that its AXOS software defined PON goes beyond a simple fibre deep architecture to deliver ‘a full, agile FTTH solution’. Meanwhile, Michael Weening, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Calix, noted: ‘Cable operators globally are increasingly seeing the benefits of fibre but are struggling with how to make the transition from traditional hybrid-fibre coax (HFC) networks to FTTH networks … With Calix AXOS solutions now in place, SKY Cable can accelerate the quantity and quality of new services and applications delivered to their subscribers.’
