Unicom enlists Nokia for cloud-native core rollout

5 Feb 2018

Full-service provider China Unicom has contracted Nokia to deploy a cloud-native core network based on the Finnish vendor’s AirGile technology in seven provinces. According to a press release from Nokia, the upgrade will enable Unicom to offer VoLTE and VoWiFi from a single platform whilst also allowing the cellco to deliver ‘one-number, multi-device’ services. The seven provinces that will receive the upgrade are: Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Hainan, Yunnan, Gansu and Hunan. A spokesperson for the vendor added that, in addition to providing for the delivery of new services, the upgrade would also offer ‘agility [that] will help enable a smooth transition toward 5G in the future.’
