Verizon Communications has enlisted US vendor Calix to assist with its planned ‘large-scale’ deployment of NG-PON2 technology in the first quarter of 2018. As such, Calix will supply its AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System to allow Verizon to deploy a single access network for residential, business and mobile services. The two companies claim that the contract represents an ‘industry-first use of NG-PON2 technology’. The network overhaul will commence in Tampa, Florida.
Vincent O’Byrne, director of technology planning at Verizon, commented: ‘NG-PON2, allows us to converge our many service networks into a single unified intelligent network, and simplify our operating model by integrating the optical line terminal (OLT) and subscriber management system.’
