State-backed Algerie Telecom (AT) announced the commercial launch of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband services in several provinces (wilayas) on 30 January 2018, Agence Ecofin reported. Further regional launches are expected through the year, as AT added that the gigabit-capable direct fibre access network is being deployed to ‘the rest of the country’. The telco signed new fibre rollout contracts with Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE last year. TeleGeography notes that until now, AT provided residential fibre-to-the-building (FTTB)/FTTH in limited, selected locations only (including FTTH in the El Harrach suburb of Algiers).
