Airtel gets nod to acquire Tigo Rwanda

25 Jan 2018

The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has approved the acquisition of 100% of Millicom International Cellular (MIC) subsidiary Tigo Rwanda by smaller rival Airtel Rwanda. The merger will reduce the country’s mobile market from three players down to two, with the combined Tigo/Airtel unit jumping ahead of current sector leader MTN. The most recent figures from the RURA gave MTN 3.73 million active subscribers at the end of December 2017, while Tigo had 3.46 million and Airtel 1.63 million.
