Mobile operators fulfil coverage obligations

20 Dec 2017

The National Authority for Management and Regulation for Communications (ANCOM) has declared that mobile operators have fulfilled their obligation to fill in coverage gaps in 676 localities as stated in their 2012 licence agreements, reports Business Review. In July 2016 ANCOM imposed fines totalling RON900,000 (USD222,061) on Orange, Vodafone and Telekom Romania for failure to meet the two-year 800MHz rural wireless broadband coverage targets stipulated by the terms of their new licences. The trio fell short of covering their full quotas of specified unserved villages/rural municipalities by the deadline of 5 April 2016. Between September and November this year ANCOM carried out a monitoring campaign and found that all three operators had now fulfilled their coverage obligations in the 800MHz-900MHz frequency band.
