Telecom Italia, which trades under the TIM brand, says it has achieved a record download speed in trials of 5G technology with Ericsson. The telco says it reached speeds of 23.4Gbps in a live 5G demonstration at the Polytechnic University in Turin, using spectrum in the 28GHz band. The demo included a virtual reality tour of a piazza in Turin conducted from within the university building on the other side of the city. TIM claims its trial has achieved the fastest speed for a 5G test in an urban environment. The operator is aiming to have a live 5G network in service across Turin by 2020.
