Albanian mobile minnow PLUS Communications has announced that it intends to shut down its mobile business on 1 January 2018, following a recent agreement to sell its frequencies to rival cellcos Vodafone Albania and Telekom Albania. An announcement on the company website reads: ‘We inform you that PLUS Communications will discontinue [the] activity of providing mobile services to its subscribers on 1 January 2018 … To ensure continuity in mobile phone services, you are advised to switch to one of the mobile operators operating in the market. At the end of the above deadline, you will no longer have the option to keep and use the numbers you have available under the SIM cards issued and provided by PLUS Communications.’
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, PLUS began the process of winding up its operations in October 2017. That month it signed agreements with Telekom and Vodafone, the terms of which would see the duo each take 50% of the operator’s frequencies in each spectrum band, in exchange for an undisclosed fee. By the end of November the pacts had been given regulatory approval by the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (Autoritetit Te Komunikimeve Elektronike Dhe Postare, AKEP) and the Competition Authority (Autoriteti i Konkurrences, AK).
