Indonesian mobile network operator (MNO) XL Axiata has extended its LTE network coverage in the so-called Thousand Islands area, deploying its ‘4.5G-ready’ technology in Pulau Lancang Besar, one of the islands in the outermost region of Kepulauan Seribu, DKI Jakarta. IndoTelko quotes the MNO’s vice president Bambang Parikesit as saying that ‘the growth of data service users in the Thousand Islands area continues to increase. Until the end of October 2017, nearly 70% of the 10,000 total XL Axiata customers in Kepulauan Seribu have used data services’.
Since June 2017, XL Axiata has been upgrading its networks in other areas of the Thousand Islands, including deploying base stations in Kelapa Island, Pantara Island, Pari Island, Pramuka Island and Putri Island. As a result, the operator says it has witnessed strong data traffic growth and smartphone penetration now stands at 43% of total users in the region, an increase of 122% over the same period last year.
