China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless provider by subscribers, is gearing up to launch nationwide Rich Communication Services (RCS) from 1 December. The operator will offer the new messaging service, which uses the GSM Association’s (GSMA’s) RCS standards, under the‘4G+Smart’ brand. RCS’s features include options to exchange high resolution images and share files as well as group chat and text. The service will be made available either natively or via a downloadable app, the latter of which is aimed primarily at enterprise users, whilst the former is intended for the mass consumer market. A press release from the GSMA noted that there are currently 50 RCS networks active worldwide, with more than 157 million active monthly users of the technology.
