SmarTone tests 1800MHz FDD Massive MIMO with Ericsson

31 Oct 2017

Hong Kong mobile operator SmarTone is trialling FDD Massive MIMO technology with Ericsson as part of its development plans towards 5G services. The trial is being carried out in the 1800MHz band, Ericsson says, and represents the first of its kind in Hong Kong. The vendor says it will be deploying its AIR 3246 solution in 2018 to support Massive MIMO over 4G LTE, with a 5G plug-in.

Stephen Chau, Chief Technology Officer of SmarTone, commented: ‘Our extension of the strategic partnership with Ericsson in October last year includes a five-year network evolution plan towards 5G. This trial represents a significant milestone in our collaboration, and reinforces SmarTone’s leadership in the network evolution journey. Ericsson’s FDD Massive MIMO solution will play an instrumental part in providing our customers in dense urban environments with enhanced user experiences.’
