China Telecom books 5.6% profit growth on continuing 4G, FTTH take-up

30 Oct 2017

State-owned full service provider China Telecom Corporation has booked operating revenue of CNY274.7 billion (USD41.3 billion) for the first nine months of 2017, up 4.1% from the corresponding period of 2016, and net profit of CNY18.6 billion (up 5.6% year-on-year). The operator attributed the expansion to strong subscriber growth in the wireless and fixed broadband segments, which more than offset the continuing decline in the fixed voice segment. Telecom counted a total of 240.56 million wireless subscribers at end-September 2017, compared to 212.49 million twelve months earlier, whilst the number of 4G handset users grew from 107.49 million to 167.52 million over the same period. Similarly, the telco’s fixed broadband user base totalled 131.31 million in September 2017, including 121.80 million fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) customers, up from 120.72 million (total) and 97.68 million (FTTH) in September 2016.
