Wataniya expands to Gaza as discussions over 3G continue

27 Oct 2017

Wataniya Mobile Palestine has finally expanded its services to the Gaza Strip, some eight years after it first launched commercially in the West Bank, The New Arab reports. Commenting on the launch, CEO Durgham Maraee said: ‘This was the largest investment that Gaza has known in nearly two decades … We hope our success in Gaza would encourage others to invest in Gaza like us.’

Meanwhile, with both Wataniya and its sole mobile rival Palcel still unable to offer 3G connectivity pending a political deal regarding the spectrum required to do so, the news outlet also reports that a meeting was held earlier this week between Allam Moussa, the Palestinian telecoms minister and Israeli officials to discuss allowing UMTS equipment into Gaza. With regards to this matter, Mr Moussa was cited as saying: ‘The service will be launched in the West Bank soon and we have started talks about Gaza.’
