Filipino telecoms giant PLDT Inc. has urged users of its Sun Cellular brand services to upgrade to 4G LTE SIM cards following the recent announcement that the technology is now available to Sun users nationwide. In a statement, PLDT confirmed that Sun pre-pay users can switch their existing SIM card to a 4G one this month, while post-paid mobile subscribers will be able to switch from November. The telco also offers mobile services via Smart Communications’ Smart and TNT brands. ‘We encourage our Sun customers to upgrade their SIMs to LTE-ready SIMs for free in our Sun shops, as well as upgrade to LTE devices so they can fully tap the improved LTE network that we are putting in place,’ said Alex O Caeg, head of Consumer Business for Customer Development. ‘This LTE rollout is only part of a broader effort to improve the overall quality of service available to millions of Smart, TNT and Sun subscribers. This network expansion effort also includes the integration of the Smart and Sun mobile networks, which enabled Smart to install more new base stations for 2G, 3G, and LTE technologies to better serve the subscribers of both brands,’ the telco said.
Mobile arm Smart Communications is using lower-band 700MHz and 850MHz frequencies to deliver wider coverage with a better indoor signal, and high-frequency bands like 1800MHz and 2100MHz to increase the cell sites’ capacity to handle more calls, texts, and mobile data traffic. PLDT Inc. is committed to rolling out LTE nationwide, it says, noting it has already deployed the 4G technology in Cebu, Davao and Rizal provinces. PLDT has allocated a significant portion of its 2016 capital expenditure of PHP42.8 billion (USD834.7 million) to modernise and improve its network connectivity countrywide.
