13 Oct 2017

German regional telecoms operator NetCologne has announced plans to invest EUR100 million (USD118.5 million) in upgrading and expanding its infrastructure in Cologne over the next five years. The ‘DigitalNetCologne’ programme will see an additional 100,000 households connected to G.fast networks, as well as expansion of fibre-optics to ten of the city’s largest commercial areas by the end of 2018. In addition, the initiative will connect all schools in Cologne to enable access to gigabit speeds, while NetCologne will also extend its public Wi-Fi network HOTPSOT.KOELN from 850 hotspots to 1,200 over the next three years. ‘With our expansion initiative, we are investing EUR100 million in digital infrastructure and are transporting Cologne to the gigabit era,’ commented NetCologne’s CEO Timo von Lepel.
