Airtel, Tigo merger taking shape

6 Oct 2017

The Ghanaian subsidiaries of Bharti Airtel and Millicom International Cellular (MIC) have been granted approval from the National Communications Authority (NCA) to merge, with further details developing this week. According to the India Economic Times the combined entity will be required to submit a network integration plan to the NCA in order to ensure efficient and equitable distribution and access to the spectrum. This will be a phased process carried out on a geographical basis over a period of no more than 18 months to avoid disruptions to the network. A supplementary agreement to the licences of the two companies will be signed between the NCA, Millicom’s Tigo unit and Airtel, while the merged entity will hold a valid 3G licence until 25 January 2024 and a 2G licence valid until 30 October 2021.
