Greek incumbents apply for 1800MHz spectrum; 3400MHz consultation extended

5 Oct 2017

The Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT) has announced that Greece’s three incumbent cellcos – Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind Hellas – have all submitted applications to participate in the forthcoming tender for rights to use wireless spectrum in the 1800MHz band. The sale includes six packets of 2×5MHz spectrum in the ranges 1830MHz-1845MHz/1735MHz-1750MHz and 1805MHz-1820MHz/1710MHz-1725MHz, as well as five packets of 2×5MHz in the range 1855MHz-1880MHz/1760MHz-1785MHz. The spectrum is already being used by the three operators, but their existing licences are due to expire between 2018 and 2020. The new concessions will run until December 2035.

Separately, the EETT has extended its public consultation on the possible allocation of wireless broadband spectrum in the 3400MHz-3800MHz band. Submissions are now being accepted until 30 October. The regulator has also announced that it plans to run a consultation exercise to discuss issues related to open internet access. The process is expected to start by 4 December.
