Smartfren: seven million 4G users at end-June

Indonesian operator PT Smartfren Telecom (Smartfren) says it had seven million 4G users on its mobile network at the end of the second quarter, thanks to an aggressive marketing drive that foregrounded its low-cost data bundles. The firm’s vice president of brand and communications, Derrick Surya, confirmed the take-up in a press conference, noting that Smartfren continues to encourage its customers to migrate from its legacy CDMA network to LTE. To entice them to switch, the operator recently launched the new Andromax A2 smartphone which costs IDR849,000 (USD63.4) and comes supplied with 8GB of bonus data and the option to be directly registered in the company’s ‘free internet programme’ for a year when they top up with a minimum spend of IDR60,000. Additionally, Smartfren is offering dongle users a new generation of Wi-Fi modems – the MiFi M5 series – which start from IDR999,000 with an internet quota of 150GB.
