NCA grants conditional approval to Tigo and Airtel merger

25 Sep 2017

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has granted conditional approval for the merger of Millicom International Cellular (MIC) and Bharti Airtel’s Ghanaian subsidiaries, reports Reuters. In March MIC’s mobile arm Millicom Ghana (operating under the brand name Tigo) agreed to combine its operations with Airtel Ghana based on equal ownership and governance rights, with the combined entity set to serve a total of around ten million customers. MTN Ghana and Vodafone Ghana currently lead the way in the mobile market, however, a merger between Airtel and Millicom would see the merged companies leapfrog Vodafone and take second place in terms of market share behind MTN. No specific details of the approval have been given by the NCA, but it said that further information would be given once the discussions around the approval have closed.
