61.3% of cell sites down on USVI, FCC reports

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has confirmed that 61.3% of cell towers on the US Virgin Islands (USVI) are out of service, in the wake of the devastating Category 5 storm Hurricane Maria. St Croix, was the worst hit island, with 78.6% of cell sites damaged, followed by St John (66.7%) and St Thomas (47.3%). Overall, as of Sunday 24 September, 65 of the territory’s 106 cell sites were out of action.

In Puerto Rico, meanwhile, the watchdog has observed that 92.5% of all cell sites are offline, equivalent to 2,470 of the island’s 2,671 mobile towers. 37 out of the 78 counties in Puerto Rico have 100% of their cell sites out of service, the FCC adds.
