Vodafone considering bid for Zambian mobile licence?

UK-based telecoms giant Vodafone Group is reportedly considering a bid for a mobile network operator (MNO) licence in Zambia that would allow it to offer voice services in addition to the data-only plans currently marketed under its brand by Afrimax Group via a Partner Market agreement. According to Bloomberg, Vodafone is looking to take part in an auction for the nation’s fourth cellular concession, after Zambia’s Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba confirmed earlier this week that the government has now given the green light to start the licence award process. As per statements made by the minister, it is expected that a new MNO could be active in Zambia’s mobile sector within a year. Firm confirmation of Vodafone’s intentions have not yet been forthcoming, however, with the report citing Vodafone Zambia spokesman Mukuka Mulenga as saying: ‘At an appropriate and opportune time, Vodafone Zambia will make a comprehensive statement.’
