Vodafone Germany has announced plans to invest an additional EUR2 billion (USD2.4 billion) in the upgrade and expansion of its cable networks over the next four years to enable it to offer gigabit speeds to around 13.7 million homes and businesses. Under its three-pillared ‘Gigabit Offensive’ campaign, the company is aiming to: bring gigabit connection rates to 12.6 million existing cable households; create ‘gigabit communities’ in cooperation with local municipalities, in a bid to supply around one million homes in rural areas with fibre-optic connections; and provide up to 100,000 companies in around 2,000 business parks with gigabit speeds. Work will commence in Bavaria and Saxony, followed by the eleven other federal states in Vodafone’s cable footprint.
