Russia’s MegaFon confirmed in a press release that it now provides 4G LTE mobile network services in all of the 83 regions where it operates, up from 82 regions reported in March this year, and 77 regions covered in March 2016. MegaFon’s 4G network consists of more than 33,000 base stations, and it has carried out major upgrades this year, raising the capacity of backbone links at each base station to 1Gbps whilst increasing the peak download speed for end users to 120Mbps. MegaFon also operates LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) services in 29 regions, and last month it switched on its first ‘Gigabit LTE’ network sections. The cellco added that LTE traffic has doubled in a year, now accounting for more than half of all data traffic on its network.
