Cameroon set for MNP launch next month

Cameroon is set to launch mobile number portability (MNP) next month, enabling the country’s wireless customers to retain their phone number if they switch service provider. Business in Cameroon cites the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications as saying that MNP will be implemented on 1 September, offering more flexibility to consumers.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in July 2015 the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (ART) awarded a contract to Huawei for the supply, installation and operation of a centralised database to manage the introduction of MNP and in April 2016 Cameroon’s cellcos signed a contract with the Chinese vendor for the implementation of the service. Total funds of XAF1.5 billion (USD2.7 million) will reportedly be invested in launching MNP by the local mobile subsidiaries of MTN, Orange and Viettel.
