Myanmar’s largest wireless provider by subscribers, Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) has upgraded its tower network infrastructure in the remote area of Putao, located in Kachin State in the north of the country. The network upgrades include switching from a satellite-based to a microwave-based system, with additional towers installed to allow faster 2G and 3G connectivity and stronger call reception for customers in the region. MPT Chief Commercial Officer Reizo Umeda said: ‘We are pleased to extend our boosted coverage to one of Myanmar’s northernmost towns, which will enable customers here to experience vastly-improved connectivity for both mobile call and data services.’
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, MPT had a mobile market leading share of 52.4% at March 2017 and became the country’s first operator to deploy an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) mobile network in June 2017.
