Gamcel operations interrupted in spat over international gateway management

The services of Gamcel, the mobile subsidiary of state-owned Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel), have been disrupted since last week as a result of a dispute between the government and its former international gateway management partner, Multimedia Gateway International (MGI), Agence Ecofin reports. Following last month’s early termination of MGI’s gateway management contract – in place since 2014 and due to run to 2019 – Gamcel’s billing system (which MGI was additionally employed to manage) was allegedly interrupted, preventing Gamcel users from purchasing mobile voice/data credit/packages, the report indicates.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Gambia’s Ministry of Information & Communication Infrastructure (MOICI) announced that on 7 July 2017 the government reverted exclusive, direct management of the country’s sole international voice gateway to Gamtel, having terminated the intermediary partner contract of MGI, which had been managing the gateway operations on Gamtel’s behalf. The state’s move was designed to enable Gamtel to directly collect 100% of international call termination fees from other operators. According to the government led by President Adama Barrow – who took office in January 2017 – the contract signed by Gamtel and MGI under the previous administration of Yahya Jammeh is too costly.
