Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT Corp) has published its financial results for the three months ended 30 June 2017 (Q1/FY17), with net income attributable to shareholders rising 11.4% year-on-year to JPY271.5 billion (USD2.45 billion) from JPY243.7 billion, while operating revenue increased by JPY93.0 billion – or 3.4% – to JPY2.810 trillion. Operating income, meanwhile, rose only marginally by 0.9% to JPY491.6 billion, although sales derived from overseas operations climbed sharply by 21.2% y-o-y to JPY4.6 billion, and overseas operating income was up 43.1% at JPY190 million. Capital expenditure in the three-month period topped JPY356.0 billion, compared to JPY284.4 billion in the year-earlier period, of which JPY120.9 billion was spent at NTT DOCOMO (mobile); JPY58.5 billion and JPY42.1 billion respectively for NTT East and NTT West – NTT Corp’s regional fixed/broadband operating units; JPY18.1 billion at NTT Communications; JPY49.0 billion at NTT DATA; and JPY67.4 billion at ‘other’ business operations.
Operationally speaking, NTT Corp closed out June 2017 with a total of 21.175 million high speed broadband subscribers, up from 20.540 million at June 2016, broken down as 881,000 FLET’S ADSL connections (down from 1.019 million), 20.294 million FLET’S Hikari fibre-optic broadband subscriptions (compared to 19.520 million) and 17.862 million IP telephony Hikari Denwa accounts (17.451 million). The group’s mobile arm reported 75.114 million 3G and 4G mobile subscribers at the same date – up 4.87% on an annualised basis – of which 45.659 million are Xi-branded LTE users and the remainder using its FOMA (3G) service.
