Ireland’s Eir Group is set to discontinue the ‘Meteor’ brand this September, with all of the company’s mobile offerings to be marketed under the ‘eir’ banner from that date. According to local news source the Irish Independent, Eir Group will start advising customers of the upcoming change from today, while all of the company’s 84 retail outlets – some of which are currently Meteor-branded, and some dual-branded – will all become ‘eir’ stores in the coming months. Commenting on the matter, Eir Group spokesperson Paul Bradley said: ‘We have adopted a single brand strategy. You can get your bundle from eir, your broadband from eir, your TV from eir and mobile from eir … What it reflects is our growing confidence in the eir brand.’
As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the Meteor brand has been present in the Irish mobile sector even since Meteor Mobile Communications launched Ireland’s third GSM network in February 2001. The cellco was acquired the Eir Group (then Eircom) in July 2005 at a cost of EUR420 million (around USD510 million at that date).
