Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) is expected to launch 100Mbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services in San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye, next month. According to a report by local newspaper the San Pedro Sun, the fibre service will be marketed under the ‘Diginet’ brand name, and extended to other parts of the country in due course. The FTTH launch has been made possible by the successful delivery of BTL’s 23km Strategic Evolution Underwater Link (SEUL) submarine cable, which connects Ambergris Caye to the mainland. Huawei Marine confirmed the completion of the SEUL cable this week.
In other Belizean news, local mobile operator Smart has successfully implemented a real-time billing and charging solution from Israeli vendor FTS to support its LTE expansion plans. Using FTS’s billing system, Smart says that it can now configure and deploy real-time promotions, new pricing plans and loyalty programmes. Smart, which claims 130,000 subscribers, says it offers coverage in all towns, cities, villages, cayes and offshore areas of Belize.
