Telenet halfway through cable network upgrade, plans FTTH pilot

27 Jun 2017

Belgium’s second largest telco by subscribers, Telenet has said that its fixed broadband network upgrade will be ready for a commercial launch in 2019. As it stands the company offers maximum connection speeds of 200Mbps on its cable network but speeds of up to 1Gbps are expected to be available in Flanders in two years’ time. Telenet previously announced three years ago that it was investing EUR500 million (USD559.6 million) over a five-year period to upgrade its cable broadband network, and the investment campaign, known as ‘Grote Netwerf’, is currently 50% complete, with over 200 municipalities already upgraded. In September the company also plans to run a pilot project of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in new residential developments, as it looks to move away from its current cable offerings.
