Telus, Huawei hail successful 5G wireless-to-the-premises pilot

26 Jun 2017

Canadian operator Telus and Chinese technology partner Huawei have claimed a ‘significant breakthrough’ with a successful 5G pilot of live point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connections over commercial central office and transport network infrastructure using equipment based on 3GPP 5G foundational technologies, utilising 28GHz band frequencies. A press release said that the pilot showcased the potential for 5G technology to deliver wireless-to-the-premises (WTTx) connectivity with the latency, speed and reliability necessary to power the smart homes and businesses of the future. The pilot is part of Telus and Huawei’s ‘5G Living Lab’ in Vancouver, where the partners have been trialling next-generation technologies since 2015 in a real-world setting (last year achieving 30Gbps wireless access speeds in a controlled environment, and also successfully deploying a Heterogeneous Network [HetNet] in downtown Vancouver).
