Ooredoo upgrades 4.5G mobile network to support 1Gbps speeds

22 Jun 2017

Leading Qatari cellco Ooredoo Qatar has announced that one of its 4.5G LTE-Advanced Pro (LTE-A Pro) cell sites has successfully been upgraded to support data speeds of up to 1Gbps for customers using devices enabled with CAT 16 technology, writes the Gulf Times. The company claims this to be a first in the region and says it plans to roll out the upgrade across the majority of its 4.5G network throughout Qatar soon. The upgrade was completed in partnership with Finnish vendor Nokia and is the next step for Ooredoo towards offering 5G services via the company’s ‘Supernet’ strategy. Ooredoo Qatar CEO Waleed al-Sayed stated: ‘We’re continuing to test our 5G capabilities with the latest 5G-enabled technology and hope to demonstrate to Qatar exactly how 5G speeds will enhance our country’s industries in the near future.’
