Belgian cellcos deactivate 400,000 unregistered pre-paid SIM cards

8 Jun 2017

Belgian mobile providers have now deactivated 400,000 pre-paid SIM cards which were not registered before the 7 June deadline, local newspaper De Tijd writes. The country introduced the registration process in late 2016, following terrorist attacks in Brussels. According to official figures from the Office of Telecom Minister Alexander De Croo, 2.1 million pre-paid SIMs (85% of the total pre-paid subscriber base) were registered before the deadline; Telenet and Orange blocked all unregistered SIM cards at midnight on 7 June, while Proximus had been deactivating SIM cards since 29 May. Meanwhile, MVNOs Simyo Belgium and Aldi Talk have both discontinued their pre-paid offerings, with Aldi highlighting that compulsory registration ‘was not possible in the shops of the retailers.’
