Russian cellco MegaFon has claimed a national record mobile data transmission after clocking a rate of 35Gbps in network technology trials with Huawei, held in St Petersburg alongside the city’s International Economic Forum between 1-3 June. The trial utilised 2GHz of bandwidth in the 70GHz ‘E-band’ and forms part of MegaFon’s 5G development plans, its CTO Alexander Bashmakov announced, adding: ‘Today MegaFon subscribers have access to speeds of up to 300Mbps [around the country] and up to 450Mbps in Moscow. Right now as part of our development programme we are creating the technological base for 5G so we can be the first in Russia to launch a commercial network using this technology and again astonish our subscribers with the fastest speeds.’ MegaFon previously disclosed plans to deploy ‘5G’ services covering limited zones at next year’s football World Cup in Russia.
