Gabon has lost its status as the sub-regional internet exchange point (IXP) given to it by the African Union, writes AfricTelegraph. The IXP is likely to be awarded to the Republic of the Congo after a delegation visited capital Brazzaville recently to discuss the matter. The withdrawal of Gabon as a sub-regional IXP stems from the lack of agreement and cooperation between members of the Economic Interest Group (GIE). Gabon was given the responsibility of providing a Central African exchange point in July 2015 and was due to serve the sub-region for a two-year period. However, it now looks as though the Republic of the Congo will take up the role of providing a Central African IXP with the aim of guaranteeing secure, fast and low-cost internet access to subscribers in the region.
