IFT approves Telcel’s 2.5GHz spectrum purchase

5 May 2017

Mexico’s Federal Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones, IFT) has confirmed that it has authorised Telcel’s previously announced acquisition of 60MHz of 2.5GHz spectrum, from DIGICRD (formerly known as MVS Multivision). The spectrum in question covers 1,575 localities, equivalent to coverage of 75.41% of the national population. The deal means that Telcel now holds 29.77% of the country’s mobile-suitable spectrum.

Going forward, the IFT has confirmed that it will hold an auction for up to 120MHz of 2.5GHz band spectrum in the ‘short term’, alongside a 10MHz block of 2100MHz/1700MHz AWS spectrum.
