UPC Poland, the country’s largest cable operator by subscribers, must wait until at least September before finding out if it can proceed with its proposed takeover of smaller rival Multimedia Polska. According to a report from Wirtualne Media, the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (Urzad Ochrony Konkurencji i Konsumentow, UOKiK) is still mired in the second stage of its investigation into the likely effects on the local cable market and is unlikely to reach a decision before September. The competition watchdog had originally hoped to announce its final ruling on the deal this month.
Liberty Global subsidiary UPC first announced its planned PLN3 billion (USD760 million) takeover of Multimedia last October. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, UPC is the largest cable broadband provider and second largest ISP overall in Poland, while Multimedia is the third largest cableco in subscriber terms and lies fifth in the broadband sector overall.
