Fox-Sky takeover clears EC approval hurdle

11 Apr 2017

The European Commission (EC) has unconditionally approved the planned takeover of pay-TV giant Sky by Twenty-First Century Fox, having concluded the transaction would raise no competition concerns in Europe. The GBP11.7 billion (USD14.5 billion) deal is currently being scrutinised by communications regulator Ofcom in the UK – where the satellite broadcaster is also a major home broadband player – focusing on potential impact on plurality and broadcasting standards, with the watchdog’s report due on 16 May. Sky also operates in Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy.
