XL Axiata allocates USD157.7m for network modernisation in 2017

Mobile network operator (MNO) XL Axiata has allocated IDR2.1 trillion (USD157.7 million) of its total IDR7 trillion capital expenditure budget for 2017 to modernise its networks, IndoTelko quotes XL director D Yosetya Yessie as confirming. ‘We want the focus on becoming a digital-focused company. From a capital expenditure of IDR7 trillion, approximately 30% is allocated for the modernisation of networks, ranging from deploying an additional 4,000km of fibre-optic cables, the modernisation from TDM to IP, and other works.’ The director also noted that in 2017 the primary focus will be to strengthen its broadband access network. In 2016, the MNO built out 8,200 new 2G/3G base transceiver stations (BTS) and 11,000 4G BTS. This year XL Axiata is targeting 17,000 4G BTS to further bolster population coverage which currently stands at 93% for 2G, 91% for 3G, and 53% for 4G.
