Movistar, Vodafone Spain ink wholesale fibre-optic access agreement

17 Mar 2017

Telefonica Espana (Movistar) and Vodafone Spain have struck a wholesale access agreement related to the former’s fibre-optic network, it has been announced. In press releases the pair confirmed that, as a result of the deal, Vodafone will be able to access Movistar’s fibre infrastructure with immediate effect, not only in those municipalities subject to regulation, but also in other areas where the fixed line incumbent has been freed of wholesale fibre access obligations. The agreement is said to be based on purchase commitments over five years, and is being pitched as a win for both sides, with Vodafone Spain seeing its fibre footprint notably expanded, while being what Movistar termed a ‘milestone’ for its wholesale business strategy. Further, both companies involved have claimed that the deal will benefit consumers, who will have access to improved coverage and alternatives in next generation networks at the national level.
