Jose del Castillo Savinon, the president of the board of directors of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones, Indotel), has indicated that international telecoms operators AT&T Inc and Millicom International Cellular (MIC) are interested in entering the Dominican Republic telecoms market. In a report by El Dinero, the executive confirmed that bilateral discussions took place at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona, and AT&T has agreed to offer technical assistance in the first instance.

TeleGeography notes that AT&T and MIC are not the first companies to express an interest in entering the Dominican Republic in recent years; in October 2016 it was reported that Bitel, the Peruvian unit of Viettel Global, was interested in launching wireless services in the Dominican Republic, targeting under-served areas.
