Advanced Info Service (AIS), Thailand’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has announced that it has enlisted Qualcomm Technologies to augment its existing LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. According to a company press release, the network will utilise tri-band carrier aggregation (3C) for downlink transmissions, and (dual-band) carrier aggregation (CA) for uplink transmissions. Further, the LTE-A network will utilise 4X4 multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) technology and 256-QAM higher order modulation (64-QAM for uplink connections). AIS notes that it expects to invest in excess of THB40 billion (USD1.1 billion) in its ongoing LTE-A deployment.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, AIS first activated LTE-A technology in January 2016, covering Bangkok and a total of 42 of 77 Thai provinces. The network utilises the 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands.
