Nepal Telecom (NT) says it has attracted more than half a million 4G LTE subscribers in just three months following its launch on 1 January. The firm had 524,684 LTE subscribers on 11 March according to a report from Republica, including 457,746 pre-paid users and 67,638 post-paid customers. While services are still only available in the Kathmandu and Pokhara areas, NT is looking to expand its 4G coverage to cities nationwide. Download speeds of up to 42Mbps are available, NT says.
As reported by CommsUpdate last week, rival operator Ncell may soon gain clearance to launch its own 4G network after the government ruled that the firm was not liable to pay capital gains tax following its sale by Telia Company to Axiata. Its licence award has been delayed while the tax dispute was settled. The government says the tax liability should fall on Telia as the seller, and not Ncell.
