Telenor, Huawei to test 5G this year

2 Mar 2017

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona this week, Telenor signed an agreement with Chinese vendor Huawei, which it claims will enable it to become the first operator in Norway to test 5G technology. Magnus Zetterberg, CTO of Telenor Norge, noted that 5G testing will commence this year, ahead of a projected 2020 commercial launch. Mr Zetterberg noted that the introduction of 5G wireless technology is likely to lead to downlink transmission speeds of between 1Gbps and 10Gbps for end-users, comfortably surpassing the current average speeds experienced by Telenor customers (52.91Mbps, as of 4Q16).
