21 Feb 2017

Altice Labs, the Portugal-based innovation arm of Netherlands-based Altice Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Swedish vendor Ericsson, which will see the two companies focus on understanding use cases for 5G, as well as conducting joint research and development, through field-tests of 5G technologies, products and services. The partnership includes the setup of a 5G Lab in Aveiro, Portugal, where Altice Labs is headquartered. The 5G Lab will undertake activities of research and development, and to conduct proof-of-concepts, trials and demonstrations. One of the main goals of the collaboration is to jointly define the requirements and deployment scenarios for 5G wireless systems and 5G-ready core based on a virtualised network architecture.

TeleGeography notes that Altice Labs has its roots in the former PT Inovacao business which was inherited following Altice’s EUR7.4 billion (USD7.9 billion) acquisition of PT Portugal (MEO) in June 2015. The innovation centre was renamed Altice Labs in January 2016.
