Finnish vendor Nokia and British mobile network operator (MNO) Three UK have announced that they will jointly deploy what they claim will be the world’s first fully integrated cloud native core network. In a press release detailing the development, the pair say the infrastructure will ‘enable massive scalability’, allowing Three UK to rapidly respond to customers’ dynamic service demands while also preparing the cellco for both the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G services. Nokia will begin deployment of Three UK’s new core network in multiple data centre locations this year, with the flexible and scalable cloud platform expected to allow the latter to increase efficiencies and take advantage of the vendor’s technology and services capabilities.
Graham Baxter, Three UK’s Chief Operating Officer, said: ‘Three carries 35% of mobile data traffic in the UK today. The cloud core network will enable us to scale even further and continue to offer great value and service innovation to our customers. The agreement with Nokia will help us to continue delivering the UK’s most reliable network.’
