8 Feb 2017

Ukrainian telco Vega – a sister company of Ukrtelecom – has given an update on its network development in 2016. In the twelve-month period the operator said it added 70 new ‘Internet zones’ using GPON/FTTx technologies in five major cities, including nine zones where existing copper infrastructure was replaced with optical fibre, and a new copper-to-GPON replacement project was begun in Kyiv at the end of the year. The company highlighted that it is also actively developing additional services, including Vega Wi-Fi public internet access zones, improved IP telephony service functionality, and its over-the-top (OTT) mobile application for Vega TV. Furthermore, in 2016 Vega began construction of a backbone DWDM network, scheduled for completion this year, which it said will increase its network bandwidth by more than 20 times from 0.4Tbps to 9.6Tbps whilst enabling the telco to become an active participant in data traffic transit to Europe, Russia and Asia.
