T-Mobile CR reports five-fold rise in LTE-A base stations in 2016

Deutsche Telekom-controlled T-Mobile Czech Republic says it quintupled the number of cell sites provisioned with LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology last year, upgrading 969 transmitters in the process, adding that by the end of 2017 it hopes to have installed LTE-A on more than a third of all LTE sites in the country. In a press release, T-Mobile CR said that it reported a total of 256 LTE-A base stations at the end of 2015, primarily deployed in the middle of Prague and its surroundings. Twelve months on, however, it claims to have combined frequencies using carrier aggregation (CA) in the whole of western Czech Republic, including Brno, boosting the total deployed to 1,225. In Brno, T-Mobile CR notes that LTE-A is configured using 2×10MHz of bandwidth at 800MHz alongside 1×10MHz at 2100MHz. The cellco says subscribers can benefit from maximum 150Mbps/50Mbps (downlink/uplink) connection. Moreover, on several transmitters in Prague, the operator says it has merged three bands – 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz (i.e. 3C carrier aggregation), including the use of 4×4 MIMO-based technology to achieve theoretical peak speeds of up to 335Mbps.

In FY 2017, T-Mobile CR intends to deploy LTE-A at an additional 1,100 sites throughout the Czech Republic, as well as expanding coverage of this technology in the capital and its surroundings. At the end of 2017, LTE-A should be installed on 38% of all transmitters countrywide.
